India’s merchandise exports rose 19.63 per cent to $44.24 billion in July, one of the strongest monthly performances the country has recorded in years. For the April–July stretch of this financial year, exports are up 17.04 per cent to $173.78 billion.

That’s not a one-off spike. That’s a trend line. And if you’re a foreign importer, it tells you three things worth acting on.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal attributed the export surge to stronger shipments of petroleum products, electronics, engineering and marine goods. For importers, this usually translates to:

More stable production capacity across supplier bases
Faster-maturing export processes (customs, compliance, freight booking)

It’s not all one-directional. Imports into India grew even faster, rising about 17.52 per cent to $76.22 billion in July, which pushed India’s trade deficit to a six-month high of $31.98 billion, up from $27.88 billion in the same month last year.

Why should an importer care about India’s deficit? Because a widening deficit increases pressure on the government and RBI to keep the rupee competitive and export incentives active – both of which work in your favor as a buyer. A weaker or stable rupee against major currencies generally means better landed costs for foreign buyers, all else equal.

Diversification beyond commodities is real - and it opens new sourcing categories

One detail worth flagging for buyers still thinking of India as a “cheap commodity” source: the composition of exports is shifting toward higher-value manufactured goods – electronics, engineering products, and value-added items – gradually reducing reliance on low-value, undifferentiated exports.

Translation for sourcing teams: the same country you buy raw materials or basic goods from is increasingly capable of producing finished, higher-spec, private-label-ready products. If you haven’t asked your India supplier about upgraded capabilities in the last 12 months, it’s worth a conversation.

What This Means for Your Next Order

If you’re already sourcing from India, this data supports locking in medium-term contracts now, while capacity is high and momentum is strong on the supplier side. If you’re evaluating India as a new sourcing market, this is a strong signal that the ecosystem is maturing – not just growing in volume, but in sophistication.

Either way, the fundamentals matter more than the headline: rising exports, expanding capacity, and a manufacturing base that’s diversifying beyond commodities. That’s the kind of environment where reliable, well-vetted sourcing partnerships pay off.
